Kolkata, August 12 (NationPress) On Tuesday, the Kolkata Police announced that they have not found any evidence indicating that officers assaulted the mother of the RG Kar victim during the recent 'Nabanna Avijan' (March to the State Secretariat) event.
The police further dismissed claims of mistreatment towards the victim's father as he tried to file a complaint, confirming that their complaint has been officially recorded at the Park Street police station.
Joint Commissioner of Police (headquarters), Miraj Khalid, made this statement during a press briefing.
He noted that the police possess multiple videos from the incident on August 9, 2025, but none depict any police officers physically assaulting the victim's mother.
'To date, we have found no evidence of police brutality against the victim's mother in any video footage. We have thoroughly examined all available recordings, and none show her being assaulted on the street,' Khalid stated.
However, the senior officer expressed his sympathy regarding the injuries sustained by the victim's mother.
'If anyone has videos or photographs concerning this incident, we urge them to share them with the police,' he added.
In response to allegations that Kolkata Police are obstructing the victim's father from filing a complaint, the police clarified, 'Their complaint has been logged at Park Street police station, and an investigation is underway.'
This response came after the victim's father submitted a complaint letter to Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, alleging that the Shakespeare Sarani police station was unhelpful in facilitating the complaint and directed them to other police stations.
Police sources indicated that officers may reach out to the victim's mother if necessary for further clarification about the incident.
The first anniversary of the tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Saturday was marred by significant unrest following a confrontation between police and demonstrators participating in 'Nabanna Avijan.'
The victim's mother claimed that she was struck by police officers when she, along with her husband and other protesters, attempted to march towards 'Nabanna' (State Secretariat).
Additionally, the victim's mother and BJP leaders alleged that the police's actions resulted in the breaking of her sacred conch shell-bangle, a traditional symbol of married Hindu women.
Meanwhile, Joint Commissioner of Police (headquarters) stated that the 'Nabanna Avijan' took place on August 9 without the necessary police permissions.
'Approximately 400 to 500 individuals assembled at Dorina Crossing and attempted to advance towards Park Street. The participants verbally abused law enforcement, and many physically attacked the officers on duty,' Khalid remarked, displaying images of the assaulted police personnel.
In connection with the unrest during the march, seven FIRs have been filed (six with Kolkata Police and one with Howrah Police).
Joint Commissioner of Police (headquarters) indicated that some individuals have been identified so far through video analysis.
Notices have been issued to six individuals. Police sources confirmed that these notices were served in connection with three of the six cases registered with the Kolkata Police.
Notices have been dispatched to BJP leaders Sajal Ghosh, Tamoghan Ghosh, and BJP MLA Ashok Dinda based on the complaint filed at New Market Police Station.
Notices have also been sent to BJP functionaries Bhola Sarkar, Kushal Pandey, and Kamaljit Singh based on the complaint registered at Hare Street Police Station.
However, no arrests have been made at this time.
