Kolkata, Aug 13 (NationPress) The father of the RG Kar rape-murder victim vehemently dismissed the Kolkata Police's assertion that there is no proof of officers assaulting his wife during the August 9 Nabanna Avijan.
Addressing the media, the victim's father expressed his distrust in the police, claiming that the officers lack the integrity to perform a fair investigation into their allegations.
"The police's statement is absurd. If they maintain this, where can the average citizen turn for help? There were numerous CCTVs in the area. The footage of my wife being assaulted should exist. I cannot understand why the police have not retrieved it. We have lost all confidence in them," stated the victim's father.
His strong response came a day after Joint Commissioner of Police (headquarters) Miraj Khalid announced that the Kolkata Police had various videos from that day (August 9), but none captured officers attacking the victim's mother.
"To date, we have not found any evidence in the videos of police assaulting the victim's mother. The police possess several recordings of the incident, all of which have been reviewed, yet no evidence has emerged of the victim's mother being forcefully thrown onto the street and beaten. We invite anyone with videos or images from that day to share them with the police," remarked Khalid.
In reaction, the father of the deceased young doctor stated, "I am unsure of the police's intentions. They seem powerless and are seeking assistance from others. Many witnesses observed the police striking my wife. They were yanking her by the arm, leading to the breaking of her conch shell bangles. It's astonishing that they cannot produce footage of the individuals who assaulted my wife."
He further criticized the police, asserting, "There’s no need for them to investigate; they lack the strength to do so impartially."
The first anniversary of the horrific rape and murder of a young doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 was overshadowed by significant violence after a confrontation between police and protesters involved in the Nabanna Avijan.
The victim's mother claimed that she was assaulted by police officers when she, along with her husband and other demonstrators, attempted to approach Nabanna. The victim’s mother, along with BJP leaders, contended that during the police action, her sacred conch shell bangle, a traditional emblem of married Hindu women, was also destroyed.
