Kolkata Police Tasked with Identifying Top Criminals Ahead of Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 7 (NationPress) In an effort to facilitate a smooth and secure Assembly election process in West Bengal, the Election Commission has mandated several measures. Among these, the Kolkata Police are compiling a roster of the most notorious offenders in the region.
On Tuesday, it was reported that each police station has been tasked with pinpointing notorious criminals who might incite chaos during the electoral process.
Leading up to the elections, the police curate a list of 'troublemakers', which is subsequently forwarded to the city police headquarters. This list is also submitted to the Election Commission, which uses it to enhance surveillance across different sectors. Additionally, preemptive arrests are conducted.
Previously, the police had generated a list of 'troublemakers' through input from local stations and the intelligence unit. However, this time, the Kolkata Police have been directed to highlight the 'most notorious' individuals from that compilation.
Every police station is required to select ten names from the list of 'troublemakers' or notorious criminals operating in their vicinity. These selected names will be sent to Lalbazar (the city police headquarters) via the Deputy Commissioner of the respective division, which will then relay this information to the Election Commission.
Authorities at Lalbazar indicated that the Election Commission recently suspended the Officer-in-Charge of Kasba police station for failing to include the name of Sona Pappu, a notorious criminal from south Kolkata, in the list of 'troublemakers'.
In light of this, police have been instructed to monitor individuals who could potentially create disturbances during or prior to the voting process in their respective areas.
Consequently, Lalbazar has directed that not only 'troublemakers' be listed but also the 'most notorious criminals'. Furthermore, they have issued guidelines to closely observe the activities of these ten criminals within their jurisdiction. The police have assured that they will maintain vigilant oversight to prevent any disruptions during the voting period.
