Kolkata Police Compile List of Notorious Miscreants Ahead of Assembly Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 9 (NationPress) The Commissioner of Police in Kolkata has recently instructed the anti-rowdy units at each police station throughout the city to compile a ‘rough register’ (a specialized diary or ledger) with the names and details of miscreants in their respective areas.
The document was presented to the Kolkata Police headquarters at Lalbazar on Monday, as confirmed by a senior police official.
As per the Intelligence Department of Kolkata Police, approximately 83 ‘tainted’ miscreants have been reported to Lalbazar in preparation for the Assembly elections.
The list comprises individuals from regions such as Beliaghata, Topsia, Karea, Phoolbagan, and Bhangar police station areas, as well as recently incorporated regions under Kolkata Police jurisdiction. Additionally, miscreants from Behala, Parnasree, and Thakurpukur have also been included.
Lalbazar officials noted that more names of miscreants have emerged in these police station areas. As part of proactive measures to mitigate potential disturbances during the Assembly elections, a total of 83 individuals have been identified as likely troublemakers in the city.
According to the police, the Intelligence Department of Kolkata Police aided the Anti-Rowdy Officers (AROs) at each station in compiling this list. The information was gathered from various sources, including statistics and police charge sheets concerning violent incidents from the 2021 Assembly elections and the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Police sources indicated that the number of miscreants on this list could further increase. Legal action has already been initiated against 64 individuals, with steps against the remaining 19 set to commence shortly.
An internal police report highlights that the highest concentration of notorious miscreants has been found in the Behala and South-East Divisions of Kolkata Police, each listing 11 names. This is followed by Bhangar and the East Division, which each identified 10 miscreants.
Historical patterns reveal that miscreants often become more active during election periods. Lalbazar has mandated stringent actions against those miscreants who have been evading capture for an extended period.
Although the schedule for the Assembly elections is yet to be announced, police have already begun implementing precautionary measures in anticipation of the polls.
