Launch of 100-Day Campaign to Eradicate Tuberculosis in Multiple Northeastern States

Agartala/Aizawl, Dec 9 (NationPress) A number of northeastern states have officially commenced a 100-day campaign aimed at the swift identification and treatment of tuberculosis (TB) patients.

During the launch of this TB eradication initiative, officials in Aizawl reported that approximately 147 individuals have succumbed to this illness in Mizoram this year, while 108 people lost their lives due to the disease last year in the same state.

Health authorities revealed that from 24,017 samples tested from January to the current month, 2,164 cases of TB have been confirmed.

As per the officials, 80 percent of the affected individuals have been successfully treated.

Encouraging community participation, state Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Minister B Lalchhanzova, who initiated the campaign, emphasized the importance of collaboration among churches, NGOs, and the community to eradicate this disease.

On the same day, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha launched the state-wide 100-day campaign for tuberculosis elimination in Bishalgarh, located in the Sepahijala district.

He mentioned that this initiative will target the rapid detection and treatment of TB patients across five districts in Tripura: West Tripura, Sepahijala, South Tripura, Gomati, North Tripura, and Unakoti.

Saha explained that the state now boasts adequate testing facilities and noted that TB can affect not only the lungs but also other areas of the body.

“Comprehensive screening is essential. It is also crucial to challenge the misconception that only the underprivileged are susceptible to TB while the affluent are immune,” he stated.

State Health Secretary Kiran Gitte indicated that there are currently only 1,700 active TB cases in the state, and X-ray examinations will be offered at no charge.

Individuals diagnosed with TB will receive complimentary treatment, he added.

The 100-day campaign has also been launched in Manipur, Meghalaya, and other northeastern states.

Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda inaugurated the nationwide 100-Day TB eradication campaign on Saturday from Panchkula in Haryana.
