Launch of a 100-Day Campaign for TB Elimination in Multiple Northeastern States

Agartala/Aizawl, Dec 9 (NationPress) Several northeastern states have kicked off a 100-day initiative aimed at the swift identification and treatment of tuberculosis patients.

While launching the TB eradication effort, officials in Aizawl revealed that at least 147 individuals have succumbed to this illness in Mizoram this year, compared to 108 fatalities recorded last year in the same state.

Health authorities reported that 2,164 individuals have been confirmed with TB from 24,017 samples analyzed from January through early December.

Officials indicated that an impressive 80 percent of those infected have successfully overcome the disease.

Encouraging public participation, state Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Minister B Lalchhanzova, who initiated the campaign, emphasized the importance of collective efforts from churches, NGOs, and the community to eradicate the disease.

On the same day, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha launched the TB elimination campaign across the state in Bishalgarh, located in the Sepahijala district.

He announced that this 100-day initiative will cover five districts in Tripura, specifically West Tripura, Sepahijala, South Tripura, Gomati, North Tripura, and Unakoti.

According to Saha, the state now possesses effective testing facilities and noted that TB can impact not only the lungs but also other body parts.

He stated, “Proper screening should be conducted. It’s also crucial to challenge the misconception that only the impoverished contract TB while the affluent remain unaffected.”

State Health Secretary Kiran Gitte reported that there are currently only 1,700 active TB cases in the state, and X-ray examinations will be offered at no cost.

Those testing positive for TB will receive complimentary treatment, he added.

The 100-day campaign was also launched in Manipur, Meghalaya, and other northeastern states.

Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda inaugurated the nationwide 100-Day TB eradication campaign on Saturday from Panchkula in Haryana.
