Kolkata, July 2 (NationPress) The Privileges Committee of the Lok Sabha has instructed the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to respond to the notice regarding a 'breach of privilege' and the accompanying supplementary notice issued by Sukanta Majumdar, the Union Minister of State and state BJP president in West Bengal. Majumdar reported an attack on him and his associates by supporters of the ruling Trinamool Congress last month.
In the notice and supplementary notice regarding the 'breach of privilege', which Majumdar submitted to the office of Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla last month, he detailed the assault on him and his associates during his visit to Diamond Harbour in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on June 19. The visit was intended to meet the victims of political violence and assess the local law and order situation.
Majumdar further alleged that the police officers present at the scene, including Diamond Harbour Police District Superintendent Rahul Goswami and the SDPO of Diamond Harbour, failed to take any preventive or protective measures to avert the attack, which he claimed posed a serious threat to his life and the lives of those accompanying him.
A note from Bala Guru G, the deputy secretary to Lok Sabha, instructed the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to procure a 'Factual Note' from the West Bengal government and submit it to the Lok Sabha Secretariat within 15 days, ensuring it is presented before the Speaker of the House.
“While submitting the factual note, please confirm if there would be any objection to providing a copy to the Member,” the note stated.
In his communication to the Lok Sabha Speaker last month, Majumdar contended that the attack on his convoy not only jeopardized a public representative's life but also represented a direct affront to the dignity and privileges of a Member of Parliament. He labeled the incident a 'serious breach of privilege and contempt of the House' and urged the Lok Sabha Speaker to take note of the situation and refer it to the Committee of Privileges for thorough investigation and action.
