Will Lok Sabha Engage in a Pivotal Debate on SIR Today?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 9 (NationPress) The Lok Sabha is preparing for a significant debate regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and broader electoral reforms today, following a drawn-out deadlock that hindered legislative activities.
The resolution came after exhaustive discussions between the government and the Opposition, resulting in a consensus among all parties on Tuesday to bring this issue before both Houses.
As per the agenda set during the meeting led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, a comprehensive debate on electoral reforms is scheduled for December 9, addressing the Opposition’s ongoing request for a systematic discourse on the SIR process.
The contention over SIR—an initiative that the Opposition asserts has marginalized various communities—has incited heated debates and interruptions since the Winter Session commenced on December 1.
Additionally, the Lok Sabha will continue the discussion that the Opposition has been advocating since the session began. The Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, is expected to lead the Opposition’s remarks, with Meghwal slated to respond on Wednesday.
This debate follows persistent protests by senior Opposition figures, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi, who demonstrated inside and outside Parliament, brandishing placards that read “Stop SIR – Stop Vote Chori.”
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed the scheduling through a post on X, stating that the discussions regarding the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram and electoral reforms were finalized during the all-party meeting.
