Is There No Discussion on Kerala Bar Timings Extension, Asserts LOP Satheesan?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thrissur (Kerala), Feb 18 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition, V. D. Satheesan, vehemently dismissed the assertion made by Kerala's Excise Minister, M.B. Rajesh, that the Opposition was consulted prior to the extension of bar operating hours. He described the decision as “mysterious” and politically motivated, especially with elections on the horizon.
Satheesan emphasized that neither the government nor the Excise Minister approached the Opposition to discuss the extension or synchronization of bar timings.
“If even senior leaders within the LDF were unaware of this decision, how could the Opposition possibly know?” he questioned.
He noted that bar owners have been advocating for a change in timings for over a year and had previously sought the Opposition's backing.
“The Opposition has no authority in extending these timings. It is solely the government's prerogative. If they desire our input, they should engage with us directly, not through bar owners,” he stated.
Satheesan raised concerns about the timing of this decision, which was made just before elections without being presented to the Cabinet or undergoing extensive consultation.
“There is an evident mystery surrounding such a rushed decision,” he claimed, suggesting that the Minister's statement serves as a diversion from criticism.
“If the Minister has more to disclose, he is welcome to do so. We will not be intimidated by threats,” Satheesan asserted.
He drew comparisons to a previous controversy involving breweries, which was also expedited and later halted by the court.
Satheesan alleged that a company blacklisted in Delhi applied in Kerala without the awareness of local brewery businesses, with procedural irregularities highlighted by the Opposition later validated by the judiciary.
While he acknowledged that extending bar hours in specific tourism hubs with vibrant nightlife could be reasonable, he questioned the logic of a state-wide extension.
“The government initially prolonged the hours universally and then broadened the list of tourism centers, which raised suspicions,” he concluded.
