Mad Sandhu murder: Punjab Police arrests key accused Jobanpreet from Mumbai
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Punjab Police's Counter Intelligence wing, in a coordinated operation with the Mumbai Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), has arrested a key accused, Jobanpreet, from Mumbai in connection with the murder of LGBTQ content creator Madhusudan Sandhu, popularly known as Mad Sandhu, who was shot dead in Amritsar on 3 October 2026. The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in one of Punjab's most high-profile recent criminal cases.
What Was Recovered
At the time of his arrest, authorities recovered three pistols, five magazines, and 11 cartridges from Jobanpreet's possession. The recovery of these firearms and ammunition is expected to help investigators establish further links between the accused and other suspected individuals in the case.
Jobanpreet's Alleged Role
Preliminary investigation has revealed that Jobanpreet allegedly played a role in the movement of weapons, financing, and providing logistical support to the shooters, reportedly acting at the behest of foreign-based handlers. He has also reportedly confessed to alleged involvement in three separate firing incidents linked to extortion in Tarn Taran district, according to Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav.
Broader Network Under Probe
Investigators are now probing the wider criminal network allegedly operating behind the crime, including the supply and movement of illegal weapons, the financing of criminal activities, and the role of handlers based abroad. DGP Yadav said further investigation is underway to uncover backward and forward linkages of this network. This comes amid growing concern over the use of foreign-based handlers in organised crime targeting Punjab.
Earlier Arrests in the Case
The arrest of Jobanpreet follows earlier action in the case, in which Commissionerate Police Amritsar arrested two accused — Harsimran Singh and Fateh Singh — from Gujarat. Both are residents of Sanghe village in Tarn Taran and allegedly conducted recce in connection with the murder, according to police. Following the murder, Punjab Police, in a joint operation with Gujarat Police, had already arrested six accused. The latest arrest brings the total number of individuals held in this case to at least seven.
What's Next
Investigators are expected to use the leads from Jobanpreet's arrest to trace the full chain of command, particularly the foreign-based handlers who allegedly orchestrated the killing. The recovery of weapons may also be linked to other extortion-related incidents across the region, potentially widening the scope of the investigation.
