Maha Kumbh 2025: Extensive Security Measures as Millions of Pilgrims Gather for Sacred Dip

New Delhi, Jan 13 (NationPress) Extensive security measures are being enforced in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, which is hosting Maha Kumbh 2025 and the Maha Kumbh Nagar to ensure the safety of the pilgrims.
The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Rajesh Diwedi, stated on Monday, "Today is Paush Purnima, and the security measures are fully operational. All the pilgrims have arrived here to take a holy dip. In addition, multiple routes have been designated for the Sadhus to travel towards the ghats and conduct rituals."
He noted that devotees are consistently arriving in vast numbers, causing the ghats to be crowded.
The SSP confirmed that the inaugural day of Maha Kumbh is proceeding smoothly. "We are monitoring everything closely to prevent any miscreants from disrupting the experience for the devotees," he remarked.
Devotees immersed themselves in the sacred waters of Triveni Sangam — a revered confluence of the rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and the 'mystical' Saraswati this morning, as this day — Paush Purnima in the Hindu calendar — signifies the commencement of the 45-day Maha Kumbh festival.
A massive gathering of devotees, many of whom have traveled from all corners of India and beyond, engaged in the sacred act of 'Shahi Snan'.
Anticipated to accommodate at least 450 million people, the Maha Kumbh festival runs from January 13 to February 26, showcasing India's vibrant cultural heritage and spiritual practices. Extensive security protocols have been established by the Uttar Pradesh Police throughout the city to ensure public safety during the Maha Kumbh.
For the first time, underwater drones capable of descending up to 100 meters have been deployed in the city to offer continuous surveillance in the Sangam area. Tethered drones reaching heights of up to 120 meters have also been utilized to provide aerial visibility for identifying growing crowds or areas needing medical or security attention.
At least 2,700 cameras equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) will facilitate real-time monitoring and facial recognition at various entry points.
Moreover, a dedicated team of 56 cyber warriors will oversee online threats, and cyber help desks have been established in all local police stations.
Intelligence systems are activated throughout the Maha Kumbh Mela region, Prayagraj, and neighboring districts. Numerous checkpoints have been created to screen every individual entering the district. Intelligence squads are also deployed to monitor for any suspicious activities and maintain vigilance across the area. Committed to making the Kumbh Mela the most extensive spiritual event in Sanatan Dharma, the Uttar Pradesh government has devised a thorough plan to address any emergencies.
The state government is focused on transforming this year's Maha Kumbh into a 'Digital Maha Kumbh', which incorporates advanced security features.
A seven-tier security system has been established, ranging from the outer periphery to the inner sanctum. Extensive search operations have been carried out across Prayagraj and surrounding districts, alongside thorough inspections of hotels, restaurants, street vendors, and unauthorized encampments. Vehicles entering the fairgrounds and Prayagraj are being scrutinized.
The Prayagraj Police Commissionerate's infrastructure—both permanent and temporary—comprises eight zones, 18 sectors, 13 temporary stations, 44 permanent stations, 33 temporary checkpoints, five companies of PAC, four teams of NDRF, and 12 teams of AS Check.
To guarantee the safety of millions of devotees along the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, particularly in the Sangam area, the Uttar Pradesh government has mobilized a significant contingent of Water Police personnel equipped with cutting-edge technology. The Water Police have access to 100 diving kits, 440 lifebuoys, over 3,000 life jackets, and various advanced tools to ensure comprehensive safety coverage.
