Maha Kumbh 2025: Government Enhances Telecom Infrastructure for Millions of Attendees

New Delhi, Jan 2 (NationPress) As the nation readies itself for Maha Kumbh 2025, the government has declared its extensive measures to guarantee uninterrupted communication for the multitude of devotees and attendees. This involves enhancements to the telecom infrastructure across the city, the Mela area, and crucial public locations in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
To provide a seamless experience for all attendees from January 13 to February 26 during the 'Mela' period, 126 km of optical fiber has been installed throughout Prayagraj, thereby reinforcing the core of the telecom network, stated the Ministry of Communications.
Moreover, 328 new towers/masts have been erected, which further augments the coverage across the urban landscape, according to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
Approximately 575 new base transceiver stations (BTS) across various mobile technologies have been introduced, alongside an upgrade of 1,462 existing BTS units, to ensure strong and uninterrupted connectivity in the city during the Mela, informed the DoT.
Telecom service providers have been directed to utilize advanced technologies and optimize their networks to accommodate the significant surge of attendees expected at the world's largest religious gathering.
To meet the extensive demand, 78 CoWs (Transportable Towers) and 150 outdoor Small Cell solutions are being deployed to facilitate smooth communication in densely populated areas.
The addition of 352 new BTS units, along with upgrades to 50 existing BTS units, will further strengthen telecom services in the Mela area, ensuring effective connectivity for both devotees and visitors, as per the ministry.
Telecom services are being optimized at key public areas, including major transport hubs like railway stations, bus terminals, and airports, as well as areas for holding, parking, and highways leading to and from Prayagraj.
“A special focus has been directed towards the Green Corridor, a vital route for the smooth flow of traffic, ensuring consistent network service in high-traffic zones,” noted the DoT.
To enhance public safety and convenience, telecom providers have established 53 help desks across the Mela area.
These desks will assist with services such as reporting suspected fraudulent communications and blocking lost or stolen mobile devices.
Electromagnetic radiation assessments have been conducted to ensure that all telecom towers operate within permissible radiation limits, thus protecting public health.
Furthermore, a Cell Broadcast Alert facility and a Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) integrated platform will be employed to disseminate emergency alerts, disaster warnings, and general public awareness messages throughout the Mela period.
The government also mentioned that three disaster management centers, operated by all four telecom service providers—Airtel, BSNL, Jio, and Vi—have been set up in the Mela area to facilitate emergency communications and ensure swift response during any crisis.
