Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma on Saturday, 8 August announced that the Maharana Pratap Sports University will be established in Jaipur at an estimated cost of ₹101 crore, marking a significant step in the state's ambition to become a leading sporting hub in India. The announcement came during a felicitation ceremony for Rajasthan's medal-winning athletes held at the Constitution Club of Rajasthan.

Athletes Honoured at the Ceremony

Sharma paid tribute to a cohort of Rajasthan athletes whose recent performances have elevated the state's sporting profile. Arundhati Choudhary won gold in boxing at the Commonwealth Games; Yashveer Singh secured bronze in javelin throw; Rahul Sharma claimed gold at the Shooting Para World Cup; Mona Agarwal won bronze at the same competition; and Sandhya Vishnoi took silver at the Under-17 World Wrestling Championship. The Chief Minister acknowledged the role of coaches and families, calling their sacrifices equally deserving of recognition.

In terms of cash awards, Arundhati Choudhary received ₹1 crore, while Yashveer Singh received ₹30 lakh. Additional awards were also announced at the event.

Key Sports Infrastructure Initiatives

Sharma outlined a broad slate of sports development measures already underway in the state. Incentives and financial assistance totalling ₹52 crore have been sanctioned for 3,540 athletes, and 186 athletes have been appointed to government service. Rajasthan also successfully hosted the Khelo India University Games 2025, with 7,000 athletes from 222 universities competing across seven cities. State athletes won 60 medals and finished third nationally.

The government has spent ₹18 crore on sports equipment and is establishing 50 Khelo India Centres across the state. A Centre of Excellence for athletics, archery, and boxing is being set up at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. A Sports Life Insurance Scheme has also been introduced for athletes.

Policy Framework: Youth and Olympic Ambitions

The Chief Minister highlighted the Rajasthan Youth Policy-2026, which is designed to create structured pathways in education, skill development, sports, and leadership for young Rajasthanis. Under the One District-One Sport initiative, specific sports are being promoted in each of the state's districts to build grassroots depth.

The state has also launched the Rajasthan Target Olympic Podium Scheme to support elite athletes preparing for the Olympics, and the Khelo Rajasthan Youth Games to identify grassroots talent and promote traditional sports. Sharma expressed confidence that these combined efforts would position Rajasthan as a nationally and internationally recognised sporting state.

Broader National Context

Sharma credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership for India's accelerating sports progress, describing the Centre's Khelo India initiative as a key enabler — providing athletes with training infrastructure, equipment, medical support, and financial assistance. He noted that Rajasthan's own athletes had enhanced the state's prestige at the Paris Olympics and Paralympics, underscoring the momentum the state seeks to build on.
