Political Fallout in Maharashtra Following IAS Officer's Suspension
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 27 (NationPress) The dismissal of the Member Secretary of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), an IAS officer, has ignited a political controversy in the state, shining a light on the power struggles within the current ruling coalition.
The MPCB is led by Siddhesh Kadam, associated with the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, while it operates under the Environment Department, overseen by BJP leader Pankaja Munde.
On Thursday evening, protem Speaker Dilip Lande announced the suspension of two MPCB officials after Munde reported to the Legislative Assembly that they failed to attend a scheduled briefing. Describing their absence as “gross negligence” and a “disrespect” to the constituents of Maharashtra, Lande promptly issued suspension orders against the officers.
The officials suspended include Member Secretary M. Devendra Singh, an IAS officer, and Joint Director Satish Padval.
Sources indicate that within less than 24 hours of the suspension order, the file recommending the suspension was submitted to the Chief Minister for approval.
When inquired about the decision, Lande stated, “It does not matter if I was merely a protem Speaker. I was in the Chair, and action was taken for failing to respect the Minister's directives and neglecting responsibilities.”
During the Assembly session on Thursday, Munde was responding to a half-hour debate regarding pollution in Chandrapur district. She asserted that the officers did not attend the briefings she had arranged concerning the issue.
On Friday, BJP MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar initiated a breach of privilege motion against the MPCB for allegedly disregarding the Minister's guidance.
Siddhesh Kadam is the offspring of former Minister Ramdas Kadam, a prominent Shiv Sena figure, and the sibling of Minister of State Yogesh Kadam. Efforts to reach him for comments were unsuccessful.
