Kolkata, Nov 27 (NationPress) On Thursday, the government of West Bengal declared a significant reshuffle in the police department, relocating 14 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, primarily among the District Superintendents of Police (DSPs).
This transfer follows a communication from the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, who is also a prominent BJP figure, to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. In this letter, he urged the commissioner to take action against specific police officials whom he accused of behaving like leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress.
Notably, the reshuffle includes Soumyadip Bhattacharya, the Superintendent of Police for East Midnapore, Adhikari's home district.
As of now, the state government has not named Bhattacharya's successor for the East Midnapore police chief position.
Interestingly, just hours before the transfer was announced, LoP Adhikari alleged that Bhattacharya was operating under the influence of Prashant Kishor's India Political Action Committee (I-PAC), which has been formulating electoral strategies for the Trinamool Congress since the 2021 Assembly elections.
He claimed that a local BJP leader in Nandigram declined to join the Bharatiya Hindu Parishad (BHP), resulting in the dismissal of his son, a contracted village police officer. Furthermore, he accused Bhattacharya of unjustly transferring nine civic volunteers from Nandigram Police Station simply due to their Hindu faith.
Adhikari serves as the elected representative for the Nandigram Assembly constituency.
In response, Jaiprakash Majumdar, Vice-President of the Trinamool Congress, dismissed Adhikari's allegations as unfounded. He stated, “Adhikari is known for making unfounded claims daily. Even the public questions the validity of his accusations. He consistently ties administrative decisions to politics. By dragging in an organization that merely advises, he shows his own panic.”
