Is There a Major Reshuffle in West Bengal Police Ahead of Assembly Elections?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 5 (NationPress) The Government of West Bengal declared a significant reshuffle within the state police on Monday, just before the upcoming Assembly elections.
A notification from the West Bengal Police Directorate reveals that a total of 26 senior police officials, including members of the Indian Police Service (IPS) and the West Bengal Police Service (WBPS), have been reassigned.
Of the transferred officials, the majority—23—belong to the IPS, while the remainder are part of the state police service.
Among the 26 officers transferred, three hold the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG), six serve as Superintendents, Deputy Commissioners, or Commandants, and the others are at the rank of Additional Superintendent.
A notable alteration involves the DIG of the Midnapore Range. The current DIG, Anup Jaiswal, has been appointed as the DIG of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Arijit Sinha will take over Jaiswal’s position in the Midnapore Range, which interestingly includes East Midnapore, the home district of Suvendu Adhikari, the Opposition Leader in the Assembly.
Srihari Pandey, the Superintendent of Police from Kalimpong, has been elevated to the position of DIG for the Intelligence Branch in North Bengal. The state government has characterized these transfers as routine and aimed at serving the public interest.
Importantly, the recent reshuffle has not impacted the current district Superintendents of Police.
In recent months, numerous changes have occurred among senior police officials, reflecting the significant upcoming Assembly elections in the state. Additionally, there have been modifications at the junior level, including Deputy Superintendents of Police, Sub-Divisional Police Officers, Inspectors, and Sub-Inspectors.
This transfer affects police across various sectors, including the state police, Kolkata Police, and other police commissionerates within the state.
