What Changes Are Happening in Bengal's Police Before the Assembly Elections?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 14 (NationPress) As the Assembly elections approach, the West Bengal government has announced a significant reshuffle in the senior ranks of the police force. This was made official through a detailed notification released by the state administration on Saturday.
The notification reveals that Rajeev Mishra has been appointed as the new Additional Director General (ADG) and Inspector General of Police (IGP) for South Bengal. Meanwhile, L.M. Meena has taken on the role of ADG and IGP for the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Additionally, IPS officer Mukesh has been designated as the new IGP for the Intelligence Branch (IB).
Syed Waquar Raja has been appointed as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) for the Murshidabad Range, and Amarnath K has been assigned as the Superintendent of Police (SP) for Jalpaiguri district, previously serving as the SP of Krishnanagar. In his place, Y. Raghuvanshi has been appointed.
There remains a cloud of uncertainty surrounding the timing of the Assembly poll notification, with ongoing discussions about the number of phases for the polling process.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) had previously instructed the state government to transfer officials who have served in the same position for over three years. Importantly, this rule is not applicable to personnel at headquarters, according to sources.
The Commission's directive mandates that district officials—including Block Development Officers (BDOs), Sub-Divisional Officers (SDOs), District Magistrates (DMs), and Additional District Magistrates (ADMs)—must be transferred in accordance with established guidelines.
This directive also extends to police officials such as SPs, Additional SPs, IGs, and DIGs. The Chief Secretary was tasked with ensuring that all transfers are completed by February 15.
Furthermore, the guidelines specify that officers who served as District Magistrates, Returning Officers, or Police Inspectors during prior Assembly elections should not be reassigned to the same districts they previously oversaw.
In line with these instructions, several critical positions within the police administration were reshuffled on Saturday evening. However, sources within the state government have reiterated that these transfers are part of a routine administrative procedure.
