Maharashtra Government May Reverse IAS Officer's Suspension Amid Pollution Controversy
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 9 (NationPress) The Maharashtra administration has signaled a possible reversal of the suspension imposed on M Devender Singh, an IAS officer from the 2011 batch and the Member Secretary of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB).
This development follows discussions among senior ministers and the Chief Minister in the Legislative Assembly.
The issue arose from a contentious debate regarding the escalating pollution levels in Chandrapur district.
During the Assembly, Environment Minister Pankaja Munde highlighted the failure of several senior MPCB officials to attend critical review meetings, despite the significant environmental crisis. Notably, M Devender Singh was called out for not attending a mandatory briefing despite explicit instructions.
In response to this apparent disregard for a pressing public issue, Presiding Officer Dilip Lande ordered the immediate suspension of M Devender Singh along with Joint Director Satish Padwal.
As a result, the General Administration Department, under Additional Secretary V Radha, suspended both officials pending disciplinary proceedings.
However, during the recent budget session, senior BJP leader and Minister Chandrakant Patil brought the matter to the Assembly's attention, revealing that M Devender Singh had provided evidence justifying his absence and expressed remorse for the situation.
After this explanation, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly proposed that the government consider revoking the suspension.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured the Assembly that "appropriate action will be taken in this regard," indicating a potential reversal of the suspension.
While the initial suspension stemmed from communication issues during an important briefing on Chandrapur's environmental status, the formal apology and intervention by senior officials suggest that both M Devender Singh and Satish Padwal may soon return to their roles.
