Mumbai, Feb 28 (NationPress) Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Saturday the establishment of new greenfield airports in the Vadhavan and Virar areas, as part of an extensive initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity and fostering infrastructure development in Maharashtra.
During the 93rd Board of Directors meeting of the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), Fadnavis instructed officials to promptly locate appropriate land for the planned airports and accelerate the airport project developments statewide with a set timeline.
He emphasized that the upcoming Vadhavan Port, anticipated to be the largest in Asia, is crucial for the state's economic progress. Coordinated strategies are being implemented to integrate the port with road, rail, and air transport to facilitate uninterrupted logistics.
Furthermore, he highlighted that the Gadchiroli district is evolving into a significant steel manufacturing center and announced plans for a greenfield airport to address the increasing transport and logistics demands from industrial investments.
The meeting also evaluated the expansion and modernization of existing airports in Nanded, Sindhudurg, and Nagpur. A comprehensive presentation on the development of nine airports under MADC's supervision was shared.
Officials reported that numerous industries and projects have commenced operations at MIHAN (Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur), including the Patanjali Ayurved initiative. Updates were provided regarding the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur, commercial complexes, the Maharashtra Agro Development Company, Maharashtra Remote Sensing Applications Centre, healthcare facilities in non-SEZ regions, a dedicated cargo hub, and electric vehicle charging stations.
A budget of Rs 597 crore has been sanctioned for the holistic development of MIHAN, with Rs 297 crore already released. A Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) with a capacity of 39 MLD is under construction, costing Rs 12.38 crore.
Additionally, administrative approval has been granted for Rs 99 crore for infrastructure improvements in the Shivangaon and Vitthubabanagar areas, as per an official announcement.
The meeting concluded that enhancing airport infrastructure and related industrial facilities is vital for attracting investments, creating jobs, and promoting equitable regional development across the state.
