Imphal/Silchar, May 24 (NationPress) In a significant operation, security forces in Manipur apprehended two drug traffickers, including a woman, in the Churachandpur district, recovering drugs valued at over Rs 2.84 crore along with cash totaling Rs 37.5 lakh, officials confirmed on Saturday.
A police spokesperson indicated that the first suspect, identified as Doukholet Hanghal (52), was captured at his home in Mongkot Khopi village within Churachandpur district on Friday night.
Upon conducting a meticulous search of his residence, security personnel unearthed 870 grams of brown sugar worth Rs 1.74 crore, as well as 20 soap cases filled with heroin weighing 260 grams, valued at Rs 52 lakh. Additionally, Rs 29.5 lakh believed to be from drug sales, two radio sets, and a mobile phone were also seized from him.
In a separate incident, authorities apprehended a female drug trafficker named Chigenvung (46) at her residence in Tangnuam village, also in Churachandpur district, on the same night.
From her home, law enforcement officials recovered 25 soap cases containing brown sugar weighing 289 grams, estimated at around Rs 60 lakh, in addition to Rs 8 lakh in cash and a mobile phone.
The police pointed out that these narcotics were smuggled from Myanmar, given that the hilly Churachandpur district shares an unsecured border with the neighboring country.
In a related operation, security forces also detained a cadre named Jameson Ngangbam (21) affiliated with the banned group People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) in Manipur's Kamjong district, recovering a pistol and some ammunition from him.
Meanwhile, the Border Security Force (BSF) of Mizoram and Cachar frontier confiscated 95 bags (1710 kg) of smuggled garlic from Bangladesh in the border region of Mizoram’s Mamit district, with the contraband valued at Rs 2.73 lakh.
The borders adjoining Myanmar and Bangladesh stretch for 1,643 km and 1,880 km, respectively, largely unfenced, making them critical transit points for various narcotics, particularly heroin and methamphetamine tablets entering India.
