Kolkata, March 12 (NationPress) The Union government has approved West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's visit to the United Kingdom later this month to give a speech at Oxford University.

An official email regarding this has been received by the Chief Minister's Office at the State Secretariat Nabanna on Wednesday afternoon, as confirmed by a state government representative.

"As per protocol, any official tours abroad by a Chief Minister necessitate final authorization from the Union government. Today, the approval for the Chief Minister's upcoming trip to London has been granted," stated the official on Wednesday.

As per the current itinerary, she will depart from Kolkata on March 22. Her journey will first take her to Dubai, and from there, she will continue on to London.

During her address at Oxford University, it is expected that the Chief Minister will focus on the impact of various social welfare initiatives introduced by her administration, particularly those aimed at women empowerment, on improving the livelihoods of the people in West Bengal.

Sources from the State Secretariat have indicated that in addition to her lecture at Jadavpur University, she is also set to attend an industry meeting in London, where she will discuss factors promoting the ease of doing business in West Bengal.

She is scheduled to return to Kolkata on March 29.

In 2021, Mamata Banerjee received an invitation to speak at Oxford University, but the event was later canceled. The Trinamool Congress party then accused the Union government of intervening to cancel the program.

Previously, in 2015, Chief Minister Banerjee visited the UK, accompanied by several cabinet members, including the then state Finance Minister Amit Mitra, who currently serves as her Chief Economic Advisor.

In 2023, she also traveled to Spain to attract investments for her state.
