Kolkata, Jan 23 (NationPress) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called on the Centre to promptly declassify the files pertaining to the legendary Indian freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose from the central archives.

“Netaji fell victim to a conspiracy. The state government has already declassified 64 of Netaji's classified files. It is now the responsibility of the Union government to release the files stored in central archives,” the Chief Minister stated during a function at Kalchini in the Alipurduar district of West Bengal, celebrating Netaji on his birth anniversary.

She added, "It’s regrettable that while the citizens of India know Netaji’s birth date, the date of his death remains a mystery. It saddens me to think that we are still unaware of what really happened to Netaji,” the Chief Minister remarked.

She further emphasized that Netaji was the true political guide for the entire nation. “He was a genuine leader and trailblazer. He established the Indian National Army, and the original Planning Commission was his concept. He championed the unity of all faiths. His thoughts benefitted everyone. However, it is lamentable that we remain ignorant of his actual disappearance,” the Chief Minister commented.

At another event at Red Road in central Kolkata, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, paid floral tributes to Netaji’s statue.

Previously, the LoP had raised concerns over the alleged “double standards” of the West Bengal government regarding Netaji’s birthday. Despite the state government issuing a notification under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instrument Act, 1881, declaring January 23 as a public holiday for 2025, it was mentioned in a WhatsApp group among state officials that the CMRO grievance redressal office will operate that day. “This not only breaches the norms for a Public Holiday under the NI Act but also demonstrates a lack of respect towards Netaji,” the Leader of Opposition asserted.
