New Delhi, March 28 (NationPress) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has faced criticism from the BJP after her comments regarding India’s economic position.

During her trip to the UK, Banerjee was asked about India's forecast to become the world's largest economy by 2060. She rejected the claim, provoking a strong backlash from BJP leaders.

The interviewer posed the question, "We in the UK are the 6th largest economy, India is the 5th largest, and soon it will be the 3rd largest. I predict it will be 1st largest by 2060."

In response, the Chief Minister stated, "I differ with that."

BJP National Spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari criticized her, accusing her of overlooking India’s economic advancements.

Expressing his displeasure on X, he stated, "Shame on Mamata Banerjee ji!"

He further wrote, "The world recognizes that under PM Narendra Modi ji, India is experiencing an economic boom! It’s unfortunate that leaders from the INDI alliance can’t speak positively about India even while abroad!"

Senior BJP figure Amit Malviya also denounced Banerjee's remarks, labeling them as disgraceful.

"West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee opposes the notion of India becoming the world's largest economy... This is truly shameful. She brings dishonor to the constitutional office she holds. Who acts this way on foreign soil?" he shared on social media.

While addressing an event at Kellogg College, Oxford University, Banerjee encountered an unexpected protest from a group of students who disrupted her speech.

The protesters aimed to embarrass the Chief Minister by voicing concerns about post-election violence in West Bengal and the recent RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape incident.

This sudden protest momentarily stunned the audience, yet Banerjee remained composed, responding with grace.

Despite the interruption, she successfully wrapped up her speech, addressing the protesters with a calm remark: "Tell your party to bolster its presence in our state (West Bengal) so they can compete with us."
