Imphal, May 17 (NationPress) The government of Manipur has officially announced the extension of the services of 10,500 Village Defence Force (VDF) personnel for another year, as confirmed by officials here.
Joint Secretary of the Home Department, Mayengbam Veto Singh, stated on Friday that the state administration acknowledges the significant contributions made by VDF personnel, who form a crucial part of the Manipur Police workforce in ensuring public safety.
He further explained that, according to the service terms of VDF, their initial engagement lasts for one year and can be extended based on situational needs. The state government periodically reviews the necessity and adjusts the deployment of VDF personnel accordingly.
Singh mentioned that during a meeting held on Thursday, the Governor-in-Council endorsed the continuation of services for the existing 10,500 VDF members for a year, effective from April 1, 2025, until March 31, 2026.
The VDF personnel are stationed throughout the state and play a vital role in supporting security forces to maintain law and order, safeguarding villagers and local residents.
This meeting, chaired by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan, included Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh, Commissioners, the Secretary to the Governor, and various departmental Secretaries.
Multiple proposals were discussed, primarily focusing on development initiatives, administrative enhancements, and measures to bolster overall governance, reflecting the government's commitment to improving coordination and enhancing public service delivery.
In response to the extension announcement, the All Manipur VDF Employees' Welfare Association previously warned of initiating protests to demand an extension of their service duration and an increase in their honorarium.
The VDF personnel have also been deployed in several high-conflict areas, aiding in counter-insurgency operations and ensuring the protection of civilians in vulnerable regions.
