Imphal, Jan 31 (NationPress) In an effort to enhance milk production, a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was executed on Friday, involving the government entities of Manipur and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).
In the presence of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, the Manipur Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department, the Manipur Milk Producers’ Co-operative Union Ltd, and the NDDB formalized the MoU.
Officials indicated that this collaborative MoU is aimed at transferring the management of the Manipur Milk Producers’ Co-operative Union Ltd. to the NDDB.
During the event, the Chief Minister remarked that the signing of this MoU was a long-anticipated milestone and expressed his satisfaction with the development. He highlighted the critical role of milk in the human diet, noting that Manipur has a higher demand for milk than its current output.
In a state like Manipur, which has produced 19 Olympians and numerous successful athletes, milk serves as an excellent nutritional supplement, especially since many athletes struggle to afford pricier diets, he added.
The Chief Minister extended his gratitude to the members of the Manipur Milk Producers’ Co-operative Union Ltd. for their willingness to transfer management to the NDDB and expressed optimism that state milk production would subsequently rise.
Emphasizing the need to cultivate grazing lands in various regions, he urged the Chairman of the NDDB to propose suitable locations for this purpose, after consulting with relevant farmers in the villages.
He assured full cooperation and support to the NDDB in its initiatives to enhance milk production in the state.
Chairman of the NDDB, Meenesh Shah, discussed the 'operation flood' that revolutionized India from a milk-deficient country to the world's leading milk producer. He stated that India's current milk production exceeds 239 million metric tons, accounting for 24 percent of global output.
The contribution of milk production to our GDP is between 4 and 5 percent, he noted, emphasizing the necessity for rural communities to integrate into the mainstream economy to realize the vision of a 'Viksit Bharat'. He reiterated that the NDDB has a dedicated focus on northeastern states.
He clarified that the Board has no plans for commercial activities but aims to take a purely developmental stance to boost the state’s milk production.
