Gurugram, April 27 (NationPress) A significant fire erupted at the Bandhwari landfill site, located approximately 20 km from Gurugram, during the late hours of Saturday into Sunday. The blaze remains active after several hours despite efforts to extinguish it, as reported by officials.
No injuries or casualties have been reported in connection with this incident, according to a fire department spokesperson on Sunday.
The cause of the conflagration is currently undetermined.
Fire engines were dispatched to the scene, as stated by officials.
As per fire department reports, the incident occurred late Sunday night at the Bandhwari landfill.
The fire is believed to have ignited due to the accumulation of methane gas, a combustible substance, generated from the decomposition of solid municipal waste.
The flames were further fueled by polythene and other types of plastic waste.
"A fire erupted at the peak of the landfill site, which contributed to the prolonged effort required to extinguish the flames. Numerous fire tenders from Gurugram, Palwal, and Faridabad fire stations were deployed. Approximately 40 firefighters were on-site to manage the situation, and it took over 22 hours to bring the flames under control," stated Gulshan Kalra, Deputy Director (Technical) of the Fire department.
"We quickly dispatched several fire engines to the location. Since then, around 40 personnel have been collaborating to combat the fire. It is anticipated that the fire will be fully extinguished within a few hours," he added.
In the meantime, the Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG) has set up six machines to monitor methane emissions at the Bandhwari landfill situated along the Gurugram-Faridabad Road.
MCG officials mentioned that the landfill site is under continuous surveillance via CCTV cameras, operating around the clock.
The entry of unauthorized individuals into the landfill has been strictly prohibited, according to MCG officials.
