Matsya Saagaramala: 1,594 solar lights installed for Srikakulam fishermen

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu on Saturday, 2 May inaugurated the 'Matsya Saagaramala' programme at Erramukkom village, Sompeta Mandal, announcing that 1,594 solar lights have been installed along coastal roads in the Srikakulam Parliament constituency to guide fishermen navigating to the coast in the dark hours before dawn. The minister said it was heartening to receive direct feedback from fishermen that the initiative is already yielding positive results.

What the Programme Entails

The solar lights were installed along coastal roads using Coal India CSR funds, with the inauguration serving as the formal ceremonial launch of the initiative. The Matsya Saagaramala programme was conceived specifically to address a safety gap — fishermen heading to the coast at midnight often navigated pitch-black roads with little to no illumination.

According to the minister, the solar lights are serving a threefold purpose: providing safety to fishermen during early-morning departures, boosting coastal tourism, and helping guide boats during active fishing hours.
