Is Increasing Political Interference in Religion Dangerous for Society? - Mayawati
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Lucknow, Jan 24 (NationPress) Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati expressed serious concerns on Saturday regarding the escalating involvement of political figures in religious matters throughout Uttar Pradesh and other regions. She highlighted that this trend is detrimental to societal harmony and the overall public sphere.
In a message shared on X, Mayawati pointed out that political meddling in religious celebrations, customs, prayers, and bathing rituals has surged in recent years, resulting in new disputes, tensions, and social discord.
“This scenario is unacceptable from any viewpoint, and it is understandable that an atmosphere of grief and concern persists among the general populace,” she remarked.
The BSP chief warned against the intertwining of religion with politics for narrow political objectives, stating that such actions pose significant dangers.
She referenced the ongoing conflict in Prayagraj regarding bathing rituals during the Magh Mela, indicating that this incident exemplifies the associated risks.
“The mutual disdain, accusations, and counter-accusations in Prayagraj clearly illustrate the necessity of maintaining a separation between religion and politics. It is prudent to avoid such conflicts whenever possible,” she added.
Mayawati emphasized that the country's Constitution and laws envision religion and politics functioning independently, with a focus on public welfare and governance that prioritizes the people as the true national responsibility.
She urged political leaders to fulfill their constitutional duties with integrity and without prejudice, considering the social, political, and economic interests of all segments of society.
“In the current climate, this is exactly what the public anticipates. Hence, the contentious issue surrounding the bathing ceremony in Prayagraj should be resolved promptly through mutual agreement -- the sooner, the better,” she stated.
In her message, Mayawati extended her heartfelt congratulations and well-wishes to the citizens of the state on the occasion of Uttar Pradesh Day.
The controversy unfolded during the Magh Mela when Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati was halted by police while attempting to proceed in a palanquin for a sacred dip on Mauni Amavasya and was instructed to walk instead.
A scuffle ensued between his followers and the authorities, leading to the Shankaracharya staging a sit-in protest outside his camp in the Magh Mela area.
Following this, the administration issued two notices to Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati within 48 hours, demanding clarification regarding his use of the title 'Shankaracharya' and an explanation for the Mauni Amavasya incident.
The notices also warned of a potential ban from the Magh Mela. The seer later provided responses to both notices. Since then, political parties have become involved, further escalating the situation.
