Are Political Parties Exploiting Sant Ravidas' Teachings for Their Own Gain?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Lucknow, Feb 1 (NationPress) The President of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Mayawati, criticized various governments and political entities on Sunday for manipulating the profound messages of revered saints for their own political and electoral advantages.
During the celebration of Sant Guru Shri Ravidas Jayanti, she expressed that the exploitation of saintly teachings for vote-bank politics undermines peace, brotherhood, and social harmony.
Mayawati paid homage to Sant Ravidas and conveyed her best wishes to his followers both in India and internationally.
She emphasized that Sant Ravidas’ teaching – 'Man changa to kathauti me Ganga (If the soul is pure, the Ganges is in the vessel)' – transcends mere spirituality, serving as a cornerstone for social transformation.
However, she claimed that those in power have trivialized this message, opting for superficial devotion rather than integrating its true essence into governance and public affairs.
The BSP leader remarked that Sant Ravidas dedicated his life to combating caste discrimination, hatred, and societal ills, imparting a message of equality and justice to humanity. The widening gap between rhetoric and reality has led to unrest and a lack of trust in society, she noted.
Mayawati accused political parties of only invoking Sant Ravidas’ teachings during election periods, while his multitude of followers continue to face neglect.
"His message connects religion with social service and public enlightenment, rather than with self-serving politics," she asserted.
Diving into the situation in Bhadohi district, she pointed out that the BSP government had renamed it Sant Ravidas Nagar in tribute to the saint, but the subsequent Samajwadi Party government overturned this decision due to caste bias and political vendetta.
She accused the current BJP government of failing to restore the name, reflecting a similar mindset.
Mayawati mentioned various initiatives launched to honor Sant Ravidas, including Sant Ravidas Park and Ghat in Varanasi, Sant Ravidas Government College in Faizabad, the Sant Ravidas Samman Award, and a polytechnic in Chandauli, among others.
She further claimed that prior to the emergence of the BSP, the Congress, BJP, and other parties had consistently overlooked saints and influential figures from Dalit, tribal, and backward communities.
"Now that these communities have gained political awareness, these parties recall such icons solely for electoral benefits," she alleged.
Mayawati urged the public to be vigilant against parties that politicize the names of saints without committing to genuine efforts for social justice and upliftment.
She asserted that true progress towards justice, equality, and prosperity can only be achieved by sincerely adhering to the principles of Sant Ravidas and Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar.
