Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Shillong, Jan 28 (NationPress) The Meghalaya government is considering enlisting the support of Central agencies to conduct a comprehensive investigation into posters allegedly distributed by the terrorist group ISIS-K. These posters have emerged in West Garo Hills, raising significant security concerns across the area, as reported by officials on Wednesday.
The Deputy Chief Minister responsible for Home (Police), Prestone Tynsong, emphasized that this situation is being approached with the highest level of seriousness and that investigations are currently in progress.
In response to media inquiries, Tynsong remarked that drawing conclusions at this juncture would be premature, as the investigation is still in its early stages. “We cannot provide detailed comments at this moment. The investigation is active, and it is too soon to determine if this is the act of opportunistic or mischievous individuals. Should the situation warrant it, the State Government will not hesitate to seek assistance from Central agencies,” said the Deputy Chief Minister.
The posters, allegedly released in the name of ISIS-K, reportedly caution members of the Garo community to evacuate specific areas in West Garo Hills and neighboring regions, claiming these territories as “theirs.” The threatened locations include Phulbari, Rajabala, Tikrikilla, Selsella, Garobadha, and Tura.
The content of the posters includes threats of severe repercussions for residents who do not leave these areas by the year 2027. The name Aminur Islam, identified as a Plain Belt Area Commander, appears on the poster, further intensifying concerns among security forces. The poster was reportedly discovered at New Tura Matchokolgre, near the Law College at Araimile in West Garo Hills.
Following the emergence of the poster images on social media, police promptly responded by securing the area and conducting an exhaustive search.
Senior police officials indicated that they are working diligently to verify the poster's authenticity and identify those responsible for its distribution. Security measures have been enhanced in sensitive locations as a precautionary step.
Authorities have urged the public to remain composed and avoid spreading rumors, reassuring them that all necessary measures are being implemented to uphold peace and security within the state.
