How is the Meghalaya government tackling Shillong's traffic congestion?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Shillong, Feb 6 (NationPress) Meghalaya's Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced on Friday that traffic congestion is one of the most significant challenges confronting Shillong. He emphasized that the government has implemented a comprehensive, long-term strategy to alleviate congestion in the city, starting with the establishment of modern parking facilities.
During the inauguration of the state's inaugural Automated Multilevel Car Park situated at Vivekananda Road near the Additional Secretariat, Sangma noted that disorganized parking and insufficient parking spaces have notably contributed to traffic jams in the state capital.
“Among the numerous issues Shillong encounters, traffic congestion stands out as one of the most urgent. A holistic strategy has been devised to gradually alleviate the city's congestion, and the multilevel car park we are unveiling today is merely a component of the overall solution,” the Chief Minister stated.
He revealed that the government has pinpointed nine additional sites for multilevel car parks, which will collectively provide parking for approximately 1,300 vehicles across various parts of the city.
Stressing the importance of systematic parking, Sangma mentioned that random roadside parking severely hinders traffic flow and causes inconvenience for commuters.
To tackle this issue, he highlighted a new parking policy allowing private landowners to collaborate with the government in establishing parking facilities, with landowners permitted to earn revenue from these parking spaces.
“Designated parking areas must be available to prevent indiscriminate parking,” he asserted.
The Chief Minister also outlined several simultaneous initiatives aimed at relieving traffic congestion, including dedicated parking areas for public transport buses and taxis at Khyndailad, relocating hawkers from busy thoroughfares, widening the Umshyrpi–Seventh Mile road, and proposals for an elevated or four-lane road stretching from Rhino Museum Point to Civil Hospital and Barik.
He reiterated that the gradual relocation of major administrative offices to the New Administrative City would significantly ease daily traffic burdens in Shillong.
“All these initiatives are in advanced stages of execution and are designed to facilitate smoother traffic movement, not only as immediate measures but with a vision for the coming decades,” Sangma concluded.
