Key Takeaways
Shillong, Oct 31 (NationPress) The government of Meghalaya on Friday inaugurated the Mission Clean Shillong 2027, a holistic initiative designed to transform the state capital into one of the cleanest and most sustainable cities in the Northeast. This will be achieved through enhanced waste management, active community participation, and improved coordination among local bodies and traditional institutions.
The launch occurred during a Consultative Meeting involving local leaders within the Greater Shillong Planning Area, hosted by the Department of Urban Affairs at the State Convention Centre in Shillong.
Present at the event were Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil Ahammed, and Commissioner and Secretary Dr. Vijay Kumar D, alongside officials from the Urban Affairs Department, Shillong Municipal Board (SMB), and Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA).
Mission Clean Shillong 2027 aims to create litter-free neighborhoods, achieve 100% waste processing, eliminate legacy waste from the Marten landfill, and implement technology-driven monitoring systems. It also promotes citizen-led cleaning initiatives, beautification projects, and enhanced accountability in civic management.
During his address, Chief Minister Sangma emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government and traditional institutions to address urban challenges facing Shillong. “The aim of these discussions is not merely to identify issues but to explore what we can achieve together to improve our community,” he stated, adding that the government is formalizing regular interactions with community leaders to foster development.
He highlighted critical priorities under the mission, such as CCTV installation, better street lighting, organized drainage cleaning, and urban beautification.
Sangma announced that the first phase of CCTV installation—covering 48 localities with 250 cameras—will be completed by the end of November, with the SMB designated as the exclusive maintenance authority for CCTVs and streetlights.
The Chief Minister allocated outcome-based funding to 14 localities for innovative beautification projects, urging leaders to adopt unified designs and color schemes to elevate the city’s visual appeal.
With over half of the 3.5 lakh metric tons of legacy waste at Marten already processed through bio-mining, the government is also pursuing river rejuvenation, parking reforms, and community policing initiatives.
Sangma reiterated his vision to make Shillong “clean, green, and livable” through sustained collaboration between citizens and the government.
