Shillong, Aug 12 (NationPress) The government of Meghalaya officially launched the inaugural Public Electric Bicycle Sharing (PBS) System in Shillong on Tuesday, heralding a significant advancement in clean, sustainable, and community-focused urban transportation in the Northeast.
In a ceremonial event, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and fitness enthusiast Milind Soman unveiled the city's first PBS docking station and electric bicycles.
Chief Minister Sangma emphasized, "This initiative is rooted in a genuine commitment to benefit the city, its residents, and visitors, rather than just being a superficial endeavor. It plays a crucial role in a broader vision that requires a comprehensive and inclusive policy to tackle various facets of urban mobility."
He pointed out that Shillong has the potential to evolve into a walkable city, noting that 80% of locations can be reached without vehicles, provided that adequate walking infrastructure, like dedicated pathways, is established.
To realize this vision, the Chief Minister proposed the development of a Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) policy that would include strategies to minimize roadside parking and create more space for pedestrians.
Additionally, he mentioned a Rs 45 crore initiative aimed at enhancing Ward's Lake in Shillong, which includes improvements to its bridge and overall aesthetics, alongside road expansion projects.
He underscored the importance of collaborative efforts and difficult decisions, appealing for public cooperation to reach these objectives.
Sangma highlighted the successful relocation of street vendors as a step toward beautifying Shillong and furthering non-motorised transport initiatives.
Reiterating his commitment to active mobility, he also promoted the "Walk to Work on Wednesday" initiative, launched in 2019, but recognized that isolated programs are not enough, advocating for ongoing efforts.
He praised the contributions of the Urban Affairs Department, GIZ members, and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in bringing this vision to fruition.
A senior official mentioned that the state's aim is to declare Shillong as India's NMT capital.
Shillong's unique geography makes non-motorised activities such as walking and cycling highly practical, encouraging better health and fitness.
To create a more walking- and cycling-friendly Shillong, the state government is redesigning intersections and public spaces while enhancing hawking markets, particularly in New Shillong.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the PBS system's launch is a pivotal step toward realizing the NMT vision.
Actor and fitness advocate Milind Soman noted that, having traveled across India, he has seen a rising desire to make cities more pedestrian- and cycling-friendly to promote sustainable living.
Reflecting on his 30 years of visits to Shillong, he described its stunning landscapes and beauty.
Soman stated, "The Public Bicycle Sharing (PBS) initiative is a crucial step toward enhancing sustainability and livability, improving the quality of life for all residents. The vision of establishing Shillong as India's sustainable and active mobility capital serves as an important model for the nation."
The actor expressed hope that other cities would look to Shillong as an example for creating improved urban environments, calling the PBS launch an exciting initial step.
The PBS system offers electric bicycles for short-term public use via a docking station located at the SMB Parking Lot (across from SBI Main Branch) in Shillong.
Users can rent a bicycle for brief trips or an entire day, returning it to the docking station, thus providing a flexible, affordable, and eco-friendly transportation option.
During its pilot phase, 20 electric bicycles have been deployed, with plans for city-wide expansion based on public feedback and demand.
