Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday welcomed the approval of a new coastal highway connecting Rameshwar to Paradeep in Odisha, saying the project will improve connectivity across four coastal districts and substantially cut travel time. In a post on X, the Prime Minister flagged the corridor as a logistics upgrade for the eastern seaboard.

'The approval for the construction of a new coastal highway from Rameshwar to Paradeep in Odisha will improve connectivity across Khordha, Puri, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur districts while significantly reducing travel time,' the Prime Minister wrote, adding that the 'modern project will strengthen logistics' and support economic activity along the coast.

Context

The corridor will pass through Khordha, Puri, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur — four districts that together host a mix of religious tourism circuits, fisheries clusters and port-linked industry. Paradeep, at the eastern terminus, is one of India's major deep-water ports, handling bulk cargo and mineral exports.

Odisha has a coastline of roughly 485 km, and large stretches have so far depended on a patchwork of state highways and district roads to feed traffic into the national grid. A dedicated coastal alignment is intended to give port-bound freight a faster, more predictable route.
