Chennai, April 14 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Tamil cinema figure and DMDK founder, the late Captain Vijayakanth, describing him as an “amazing personality” and a “dear friend.”
On the social media platform X, the Prime Minister shared, “My dear friend Captain Vijayakanth was amazing! He and I have collaborated and discussed various matters over many years. People from different generations remember him for his contributions to social welfare.”
Captain Vijayakanth, who departed on December 28, 2023, at the age of 71 due to health complications, was a significant presence in both Tamil cinema and politics. Renowned for his vibrant screen persona and his political journey as the founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), he was respected by many across the political spectrum.
The general secretary of DMDK and Vijayakanth’s spouse, Premalatha Vijayakanth, has previously highlighted the close personal relationship between the Prime Minister and her late husband.
In a video shared on X, Premalatha mentioned, “Narendra Modiji always regarded him as more than just a political ally. He affectionately referred to him as the Lion of Tamil Nadu and frequently checked on him throughout his illness. Their friendship was based on genuine affection and mutual respect, transcending political boundaries.”
She recounted how the Prime Minister would consistently inquire about Vijayakanth’s health and never missed an opportunity to wish him well on special occasions. “He once told me, ‘You can reach out if you need assistance. I am like your elder brother.’ I will always cherish those words,” she expressed.
Premalatha also conveyed her appreciation for the Padma Bhushan award that was awarded posthumously to Vijayakanth, recalling a touching letter from the Prime Minister that celebrated their friendship. “Modiji was always humble, compassionate, and an exceptional leader. He rose from modest origins to achieve the highest office in the nation, which is what makes him a leader who is cherished by the populace,” she stated.
Emphasizing his humility, she noted, “Even when addressing crucial national issues, he communicated with extraordinary simplicity and never acted as if he were above anyone. He feels like a brother to us.”
