PM Modi's Sweden visit: MEA lists 6 outcomes, strategic partnership sealed
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded the Sweden leg of his five-nation European tour on 18 May, with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) formally listing six key outcomes from the visit to the Nordic country. The most significant among them is the elevation of India-Sweden bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership, accompanied by a Joint Statement and a Joint Action Plan (2026–2030). Modi left Gothenburg for his next stop, Norway, after a visit that also included high-level engagement with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Strategic Partnership and Joint Action Plan
The elevation to a Strategic Partnership is the centrepiece of the visit. The Joint Action Plan (2026–2030) structures cooperation under four pillars: strategic dialogue for stability and security; next-generation economic partnership; emerging technologies and trusted connectivity; and a people, planet and resilience framework. The MEA described this as a move that strengthens economic and security resilience between the two nations.
Innovation, AI and Technology Corridor
The two sides launched the India-Sweden Joint Innovation Partnership 2.0, which establishes a virtual India-Sweden Joint Science and Technology Centre (ISJSTC). Cooperation will span artificial intelligence (AI), 6G, quantum computing, sustainable mining, critical minerals, space, and life sciences, building on existing work in renewable energy, battery storage, smart grids, smart cities, and resilient water systems.
Separately, both governments endorsed the development of the India-Sweden Technology and Artificial Intelligence Corridor (SITAC), aimed at deepening industry, startup, and research collaboration in advanced technologies. The corridor is intended to position the bilateral relationship as a future-oriented AI and digital transformation partnership.
Trade, Investment and SME Targets
A commitment to double bilateral trade and investment within five years was formalised, with a reinforced Trade Facilitation/Fast Track Mechanism and a renewed dialogue on Intellectual Property Rights. The target explicitly advances the Make in India initiative and opens new channels for Swedish capital into Indian manufacturing.
An India-Sweden SME and Start-up Platform was also announced, designed to promote the startup and innovation ecosystem in both countries and create employment opportunities — particularly for youth in India and Sweden.
Cultural Ties: Tagore-Sweden Lecture Series
On the soft power front, the two sides instituted the 'Tagore-Sweden' Lecture Series under the theme 'Vikas Bhi Virasat Bhi' (Development as well as Heritage). The series is intended to strengthen cultural and intellectual engagement between the two countries and deepen people-to-people ties.
High-Level Meetings in Gothenburg
Earlier during the visit, PM Modi, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen addressed the European Roundtable for Industry, a prestigious business forum. Modi and Kristersson also held formal delegation-level bilateral talks. The Sweden stop was the third leg of Modi's five-nation European tour, which continues with Norway as the next destination.
