Mumbai, Feb 14 (NationPress) Union Minister of State for Ayush and Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, inaugurated the upgraded Unani Research Centre at J.J. Hospital on Saturday, attributing this advancement to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of establishing traditional medicine as a cornerstone of the healthcare system.
He highlighted that the integration of Unani and conventional medicine within this co-located centre will provide patients with safe, effective, and holistic treatment, all backed by scientific research.
This initiative is set to further bolster the government's aim of weaving AYUSH systems into the mainstream healthcare narrative, promoting overall well-being for everyone.
During the Unani Day 2026 festivities and the National Conference on “Innovation and Evidence in Unani Practice” in Mumbai, Jadhav emphasized the significance of innovation and research in the field. He stated, “Unani medicine has a rich history rooted in clinical experience; however, its future hinges on our ability to generate and present scientific evidence to the global community.”
He urged institutions like CCRUM and the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM), Mumbai, to spearhead high-quality clinical research, standardize drugs, and conduct translational studies to effectively address emerging health challenges.
Referring to the national conference's theme, Jadhav remarked, “Innovation and evidence are the twin pillars that will drive the future of Unani medicine. Our goal is to ensure that each Unani formulation, procedure, and therapeutic protocol is underpinned by strong data and meets global quality and safety standards.”
He encouraged researchers to utilize modern technologies, including genomics, artificial intelligence, and advanced diagnostics, to deepen the scientific understanding of Unani concepts and therapies.
Moreover, the Minister underscored Maharashtra's role, particularly the premier medical institutions and Unani facilities in Mumbai, in exemplifying successful integrative healthcare models.
“By enhancing centres like RRIUM Mumbai and forming partnerships with leading hospitals and universities, we are cultivating a robust ecosystem where Unani medicine can realize its full potential in public health, preventive care, and chronic disease management,” he added.
The renovated RRIUM Co-location Centre, first established in 1984, has undergone enhancements costing nearly Rs 3.84 crore to improve clinical services, research capabilities, and patient care in an integrative environment.
This upgrade aims to fortify Unani medicine facilities within the historic J.J. Hospital campus and advance evidence-based research in collaboration with contemporary medical systems.
