Tamil Nadu Police Monitor 20,000 Rowdy Elements Ahead of Assembly Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, April 13 (NationPress) As the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approach on April 23, both the Election Commission and state police have ramped up security measures across all 234 constituencies to guarantee a peaceful and incident-free voting experience.
In a significant step towards prevention, the Tamil Nadu Police are closely watching nearly 20,000 identified history-sheeters and habitual criminals, often labeled as “rowdies” throughout the state. These individuals have been sorted into four categories: A+, A, B, and C, based on the seriousness of their criminal history and perceived threat levels.
Reports from senior police officials indicate that approximately 4,000 of these individuals reside in Chennai, many of whom are currently evading capture. Authorities express concern that some may seek to return to their neighborhoods during the election period to engage in illegal activities, disrupt the voting process, or sway the electorate.
To combat this, police have initiated extensive intelligence and search operations in recent days, successfully locating and detaining around 100 individuals as part of this initiative.
Specialized teams have been dispatched to all 38 districts to track down fugitives and maintain rigorous surveillance on those deemed potential threats.
Beyond enforcement, the police are also pursuing a reformative strategy. Officials have stated that individuals ready to change may be offered rehabilitation opportunities, including the chance to receive “good conduct certificates” under specific conditions.
As part of legal measures, authorities plan to invoke Sections 107, 109, and 110 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which empower law enforcement to take preventive measures against individuals likely to disrupt public order. Suspected offenders may be required to sign bonds ensuring good behavior during the election period.
A senior police representative highlighted that Tamil Nadu has a history of relatively peaceful Assembly elections, with few law-and-order issues.
He remarked, “We are implementing all necessary precautions to uphold that tradition. Our emphasis is on prevention, vigilance, and prompt action as needed.”
With comprehensive security protocols in place, authorities remain optimistic that the upcoming elections will proceed smoothly, ensuring voter safety and the integrity of the democratic process.
