Bengaluru, Jan 1 (NationPress) In light of the recent honour killing incident in Hubballi, where a father brutally murdered his pregnant daughter due to her marriage to a Dalit man, Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara emphasized that creating awareness among the populace is paramount, surpassing the importance of laws.
During a press conference in Bengaluru on Thursday, Parameshwara remarked, “We reside in a modern society. It is essential for societal norms to evolve. Inter-caste marriages are not a novel phenomenon; centuries ago, Basavanna facilitated such unions.”
“The persistence of honour killings reflects a societal failure to grasp crucial messages. We must prioritize awareness over legal frameworks. Our team will expedite the investigation and judicial processes surrounding this case,” he stated.
The minister mentioned his visit to Hubballi the previous Wednesday. “In the tragic honour killing where a father killed his pregnant daughter, I met with the family and spoke with its members. The victim’s mother is currently in critical condition and remains hospitalized. I also visited her,” he added.
Concerning the Dharmasthala case, he assured that the government would finalize all necessary procedures, including those referred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
When questioned about assigning duties to officers for the new year based on last year’s incidents, Parameshwara said, “I have gone through the survey report. We will analyze last year’s occurrences. I stressed the sensitivity of these issues and trust that they will perform well.”
Meanwhile, Social Welfare Minister H.C. Mahadevappa visited Vivekananda Doddamani's residence in Inamveerapura village near Hubballi, whose pregnant wife was slain by her father due to an inter-caste marriage. He expressed condolences to the family and presented them with a cheque for ₹17 lakhs.
It is noteworthy that on December 21, 2025, in a shocking honour killing in Inamveerapura village, a father committed the heinous act of murdering his daughter.
The girl’s father and relatives also assaulted her husband, Vivekananda Doddamani, and his family members. Injuries were reported among Mareppa Doddamani, Sunil Harijan, Sangeetha Harijan, Renavva, Ananya Doddamani, Yallappa Doddamani, and Huvamma Doddamani.
Reports indicate that Manya Patil, a Lingayat, married Vivekananda, a Dalit. They both hail from the same village and developed their relationship while pursuing their degrees. Their bond grew through Instagram, culminating in their marriage on June 19 at the registrar’s office in Hubballi.
Preliminary investigations suggested that Manya had previously threatened to commit suicide if Vivekananda did not marry her. Following their marriage, both families were summoned by the police and a compromise was brokered. Manya and Vivekananda moved to Haveri but returned to their village on December 8, expecting acceptance due to Manya’s pregnancy.
However, tensions escalated once again between the two families. The Hubballi Rural police intervened, advising both sides to maintain peace. Yet, Manya Patil’s father and relatives allegedly stormed their home and killed her. The police have arrested the father and two accomplices concerning this case.
Vivekananda has called for the death penalty for those responsible for this tragic incident.
