J&K: Mother jumps from window after son found hanging in Reasi; elderly woman murdered in Pulwama
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Two separate incidents of violence and tragedy unfolded across Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, 19 October — a mother in Reasi district sustained serious injuries after jumping from a window upon discovering her son hanging, while an elderly woman was found murdered inside her home in Pulwama district in the early hours of the morning.
Reasi: Mother Injured After Discovering Son Hanging
The distressing incident occurred in Baggodas village of Mahore tehsil, Reasi, during the intervening night of 18 and 19 October. A youth identified as Mohd Farooq, 20, son of Shabir Ahmed, was found hanging inside his home, according to police.
His mother, Basso Begum, aged 45, was so overwhelmed upon discovering her son that she jumped from a window of the house, sustaining serious injuries in the fall. Family members rushed her to Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu, where she is currently undergoing treatment.
Police have registered the case and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the youth's death.
Pulwama: 70-Year-Old Woman Killed at Home
In a separate and deeply troubling incident, Jana Begum, 70, wife of late Ghulam Ahmad Bhat, was found murdered inside her residence in Parigam village of Pulwama district at approximately 5 am on Monday.
According to officials, her son had left the house to offer pre-dawn prayers at a nearby mosque when unidentified assailants allegedly entered the home. 'The assailants allegedly entered the house and slit the woman's throat, killing her on the spot. She was found lying in a pool of blood,' an official said.
The motive behind the killing remains unclear, according to officials. Police have taken cognisance of the incident and launched an investigation to identify the assailants and establish the full circumstances of the murder.
Investigations Underway
Both cases are being investigated by local police. The Pulwama murder, in particular, has drawn attention given its targeted nature — with the victim alone and vulnerable at home while her son was away. Authorities have not yet named any suspects or established a motive in either case.
This comes amid ongoing security operations across Jammu and Kashmir, where law enforcement agencies have been on heightened alert. The twin incidents highlight the continued vulnerability of residents in rural pockets of the Union Territory.
