Bhopal, Sep 29 (NationPress) A significant meeting was convened on Monday by a committee led by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to discuss the selection of the Chairperson and members for the Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC).
In attendance were Madhya Pradesh Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar, Leader of Opposition (LoP) Umang Singhar, and other committee members at the Chief Minister's residence in Bhopal.
The committee aimed to finalize a chairperson and two members; however, only one member’s appointment was confirmed due to a lack of consensus on the remaining names, according to sources.
“The name of Avdesh Pratap Singh, the Principal Secretary of Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha, has been approved as a member of the State Human Rights Commission. The selection of a chairperson and another member is currently on hold,” a source revealed.
Importantly, Avdesh Pratap Singh is scheduled to retire from service by September 30.
Congress MLA and LoP Umang Singhar expressed concerns to the media regarding the transparency of the selection process for the SHCR members.
“The Human Rights Commission serves as a beacon of justice and is integral to our Constitution. When the government and institutions falter in delivering justice, the Commission becomes the last refuge for the populace. Therefore, I emphasized that an unqualified individual should not be appointed as a member,” he stated.
This development follows the end of the tenure of Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) Acting Chairperson Rajiv Tandon last Friday.
Reports indicate that over 4,500 complaints are currently pending before the MP Human Rights Commission.
Since the conclusion of Manohar Mamtani’s term as Chairman of the MPHRC, no successor has been named, and Rajiv Tandon has been serving as the Acting Chairman.
