MP forest team attacked with axes, sticks in Ashoknagar; Deputy Ranger fractures leg
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
A Deputy Ranger suffered a fractured leg and at least two other forest personnel were injured after an eight-member Madhya Pradesh Forest Department team was allegedly attacked by a group of 8-10 individuals during a timber seizure operation near Kiraula village in Ashoknagar district on Monday, 28 July. The assault, carried out with sticks, stones, and an axe, occurred while the team was transporting a seized bullock cart loaded with illegally felled timber toward Mungaoli.
How the Attack Unfolded
The forest team had acted on a tip-off about illegal timber transportation from a nearby forest under the Mungaoli Forest Range. Upon intercepting the bullock cart, officials seized it and began moving it to Mungaoli using a tractor. According to police, individuals accompanying the cart allegedly alerted associates, who arrived shortly after on five motorcycles.
The group blocked the tractor and launched a physical assault on the forest personnel. Deputy Ranger Kamlesh Batham sustained a fracture in his leg, while forest employee Balveer Patel and two other staff members also received injuries. All injured personnel were taken to Mungaoli Civil Hospital; Batham was subsequently referred to the district hospital for further treatment.
What Police Said
Mungaoli Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDOP) Sanam B. Khan confirmed the incident, stating that the attackers assaulted the forest team while it was conducting an inspection and seizure operation in the forest area. 'The attackers assaulted the forest personnel with sticks, stones and an axe. A case is being registered, and efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved,' a police official said.
Khan added: 'The accused are yet to be identified. Police teams have been deployed to trace and arrest them. Strict legal action will be taken against those found involved.'
Accused Flee Into Forest
The attackers fled into the adjoining forest immediately after the assault. Preliminary information suggests they are residents of Jiyajigarh village, though their identities had not been formally established as of Tuesday. Police have deployed teams in the area to trace the accused.
Broader Context
Attacks on forest officials during anti-poaching and anti-smuggling operations have been a recurring concern across central Indian states. Timber smuggling networks in Madhya Pradesh have repeatedly clashed with enforcement teams, particularly in districts bordering dense forest zones. This incident underscores the physical risks faced by field-level forest personnel operating without adequate security cover during seizure operations.
A formal case is being registered against the accused, and further legal proceedings are expected once identities are confirmed.
