Gumla (Jharkhand), Jan 20 (NationPress) A violent confrontation took place between a notorious criminal group and police units in the Devragani forest of the Bishunpur police station area, situated in Gumla district, Jharkhand.
While there are unverified reports indicating that multiple gang members were injured during the gunfight that commenced late Sunday night, official confirmation regarding casualties has not been provided.
In the course of the operation, authorities uncovered an arsenal of weapons and explosives, including an AK-47 rifle. Gumla Superintendent of Police (SP) Shambhu Kumar Singh verified the weapon recovery and shared insights about the operation.
“The police received intelligence that associates of the Ramdev Jhangur gang were concealed in the Devragani forest. A coordinated team of police and security personnel, led by the IRB Commandant, was sent to the region. Upon surrounding the forest, the gang members initiated gunfire, leading the security forces to respond. Overcome by the strength of the forces’ reaction, the gang retreated into the dense woods,” stated SP Singh.
The security forces are persistently conducting their search operation in the forest, combing through the area thoroughly, he added.
Police teams from Ghagra, Gumla, and Bishunpur police stations were instrumental in the operation.
The Ramdev Jhangur gang has long instilled fear in the forested areas of Gumla, extorting funds from contractors, business owners, and local residents at gunpoint. Reports indicate that Ramdev Jhangur himself was at the helm during the encounter. Remarkably, just two days prior, a significant gang associate, Santu Oraon, was apprehended by the Bishunpur police.
Active since 2002 in the Bishunpur, Chainpur, and Ghaghra police station regions, Ramdev Jhangur is a name that evokes fear in the locality. He has over 50 cases lodged against him across these regions. Despite numerous police operations over the last two decades, he continues to remain elusive.
This operation signifies another attempt by the authorities to diminish the gang’s grip and restore tranquility in Gumla’s forest territories.
