Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chaibasa (Jharkhand), Aug 13 (NationPress) A Maoist was fatally shot during a violent clash with police and security personnel near Sauta village, which falls under the jurisdiction of Goilkera police station in West Singhbhum district, Jharkhand, on Wednesday morning. Authorities reported the recovery of an SLR rifle from the encounter site.
Jharkhand Police IG (Operations) Dr. Michael Raj stated that the confrontation occurred amid a coordinated search operation in the Goilkera region, recognized as a stronghold for Maoist activity.
As the team advanced into the dense forested hills of Sauta, Maoist militants opened fire indiscriminately. The security forces retaliated, leading to a gunfight that persisted for nearly an hour, with both sides exchanging numerous rounds.
According to the IG, the rebels experienced considerable losses. A Maoist corpse was recovered following the securing of the area, although the identity of the deceased remains unknown.
He noted that security forces have ramped up combing operations in the area to locate Maoists who managed to flee.
In recent weeks, law enforcement has been conducting persistent anti-Naxal operations within the Saranda region and surrounding forests—dismantling Maoist hideouts, confiscating substantial stockpiles of IEDs, and retrieving weapons.
Officials indicate that this initiative is designed to eradicate Maoist dominance in the region.
Dr. Raj asserted that the forces have been experiencing ongoing victories and expressed optimism that Maoist activities in the area will soon cease.
This year, 23 Maoists have been killed in various encounters throughout Jharkhand. In April, eight Maoists—including the prominent leader Prayag Manjhi, alias Vivek—were eliminated in a significant operation in Bokaro district's Lugu Hills.
Previously, police reported that Maoist activities are now largely confined to the Saranda jungles in Jharkhand, claiming they have been eradicated from other regions.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has previously stated that security forces are expected to eliminate Maoism from the country by March of next year. He has also urged Maoists to surrender and reintegrate into society by taking advantage of the government's rehabilitation package.
