Is the MP government really showing double standards on OBC reservation?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhopal, Jan 30 (NationPress) The Congress party has accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Madhya Pradesh government of displaying double standards and failing to support the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in relation to the 27 percent reservation in state government services.
This claim from the Congress is not unprecedented, but it marks a renewed critique, particularly as the legal representatives for the state government did not appear in a crucial Supreme Court hearing on Thursday.
The Supreme Court has rescheduled the next hearing for this issue to February 4.
Veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister Kamal Nath condemned this situation, asserting that the absence of legal representation was a calculated move by the ruling BJP to undermine their case in court.
"The Supreme Court was set to deliberate on the case concerning the 27 percent reservation for OBCs today, but no lawyer from the state government was present. This clearly illustrates the double standards of the BJP regarding OBC reservations," Nath stated.
He further noted that the BJP-led government has consistently employed this evasive strategy over the years.
"At times, lawyers fail to show up in court, and when they do, they lack essential documents. On occasions when they possess the documents, they request postponements," Nath explained.
Kamal Nath, who sanctioned the 27 percent reservation for OBC candidates during his tenure as Chief Minister in 2019-20, alleged that even with no legal stay from either the High Court or the Supreme Court, the BJP government is continually denying the OBC community their rightful reservations.
State Congress President Jitu Patwari also weighed in, claiming that over the last seven to eight years, the BJP has squandered public funds on lawyers to obstruct OBC reservations.
"Chief Minister Mohan Yadav's government failed to even send its legal representatives to the Supreme Court. It's evident that the BJP government has no intention of enforcing the 27 percent reservation for the OBC community," Patwari remarked on social media platform X.
The BJP has yet to release an official response to these allegations.
