Kohima, Feb 15 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio, passionately called for pan-Naga unity on Sunday and requested the Central Government to hasten an honorable and inclusive resolution to the long-standing Naga political issue.
While speaking at the two-day Lui-Ngai-Ni celebration held at the Ukhrul district headquarters, Rio emphasized that unity and trust are crucial for progress and enduring peace.
The festival was organized by the United Naga Council (UNC) and hosted by the Tangkhul Naga Long, both significant entities in Naga society.
In his greetings, the Chief Minister characterized the Lui-Ngai-Ni festival as more than just a cultural celebration, stating it represents a reaffirmation of Naga identity, heritage, and collective destiny. He noted that Naga traditions, dances, folk songs, rituals, and indigenous games serve as vibrant expressions of the community's values and worldview.
Rio highlighted that true unity does not equate to uniformity, asserting that while the Naga populace may be divided by administrative boundaries, they remain emotionally and culturally united as one family. He stressed the importance of a pan-Naga platform to amplify shared aspirations.
Commenting on the merger of the NDPP (Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party) and NPF (Naga People’s Front) last October under a common symbol, Rio deemed it a historic milestone that bolstered unity and morale for the greater good of the Naga people. He also congratulated Losu Dikho on his appointment as Deputy Chief Minister of Manipur.
Regarding the political issue, Rio reiterated the enduring demand for the integration of all contiguous Naga-inhabited areas under a single administrative framework. He noted that the Nagaland Assembly had passed several resolutions supporting this goal and mentioned that recent dialogues with civil society organizations reflected a strong public sentiment for an expedited resolution.
Rio pointed out that a sub-committee from the Political Affairs Committee met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah earlier this month to advocate for the advancement of peace talks at the political level, expressing optimism for a timely, honorable, and inclusive outcome.
“To our elders, you are the living libraries of our people. To our women, you are the pillars of our homes and culture. To our youth, you hold the plough for the next sowing. Embrace your heritage as the foundation of your strength and creativity,” the Chief Minister remarked in a post on his X account.
The event witnessed participation from legislators from Nagaland and Manipur, senior officials, party leaders, and representatives from various Naga tribes and civil society organizations.
The Lui-Ngai-Ni festival is celebrated by Naga tribes almost concurrently during the onset of spring, symbolizing the auspicious moment for sowing seeds.
