Why is Nainital Missing Its Usual Snowfall?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Nainital, Jan 8 (NationPress) In Nainital, the renowned hill station in Uttarakhand, the typical snowfall expected in December has yet to arrive as January unfolds without any trace of it. While the temperatures have dropped, the sun continues to shine brightly during the day, and the mornings and evenings are characterized by sharp winds.
The lack of snowfall has resulted in a noticeable decline in tourist numbers compared to previous years, leading to disappointment among local businesses and merchants.
Nonetheless, the breathtaking scenery of Nainital continues to captivate visitors. Tourists expressed that the serene valleys, tranquil ambiance, and fresh air provide a deeply calming experience.
However, many came with the anticipation of seeing snowfall, which has yet to occur.
"The weather here is fantastic, but the absence of snow creates a feeling of something missing. It’s quite chilly in the mornings and evenings, yet the afternoons offer pleasant sunshine. We are truly enjoying our time here," a tourist from Haryana shared with IANS.
Visitors mentioned enjoying activities like boating and shopping, having a delightful time in the hill town, though the missing snowfall rendered the overall experience slightly lacking.
"The weather in Nainital is very lovely, yet everyone keeps gazing at the sky, wishing for a blanket of snow. We hope to see snowfall during our visit," remarked another tourist from Delhi.
This year, the region experienced above-average rainfall in preceding months, raising hopes for timely snowfall. Local entrepreneurs and shopkeepers noted that snowfall typically brings a significant increase in tourists, greatly benefiting their businesses.
They remain hopeful that weather patterns might shift in the coming days, allowing for snowfall to occur.
"We sincerely hope that snowfall happens soon. It is crucial for our business. Our livelihoods depend on it," a local businessman stated to IANS.
Meanwhile, data from the regional meteorological center of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has underscored the severity of the dry spell in Uttarakhand.
The state recorded no rainfall or snowfall across all 13 districts in December of last year, marking it as the driest December in over a decade.
IMD data indicated that Uttarakhand faced a total rainfall deficit of 24 percent during the post-monsoon season from October to December.
However, conditions sharply declined in December, with all districts, including Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital, Pithoragarh, and Uttarkashi, reporting no rainfall against the normal averages ranging from 7.9 mm to 23.7 mm.
Typically, Uttarakhand receives approximately 17.5 mm of rainfall in December, but this year saw actual precipitation at zero, representing a stark deviation from long-term climatic patterns.
