Guwahati, Aug 1 (NationPress) - Assamese actress Nandini Kashyap, detained in relation to a tragic hit-and-run incident in Guwahati that led to the death of a 21-year-old engineering student, is set to appear in court today, according to officials.
The actress's two-day police custody has concluded, and she will be presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court in Kamrup district.
As per police sources, the investigative agency intends to contest Kashyap's bail request and will seek an extension of her police custody.
Additionally, a well-known theatre group in the city has terminated its contract with Nandini Kashyap due to the hit-and-run incident.
The victim, Samiul Haque, a 21-year-old engineering student who was seriously injured in the accident, tragically passed away on Tuesday evening, leading to the arrest of Kashyap.
The incident took place during the early hours of July 26 in the Dakshingaon area, where the actress allegedly fled the scene without ensuring that the injured youth received medical attention.
Samiul was returning home after a part-time job at a streetlight installation site when he was struck by a Bolero SUV.
Kashyap initially reported to the police on the morning of July 26, was interrogated, and was subsequently released on a Personal Recognizance (PR) bond.
She was called back on July 27 for further questioning and was released again. However, her arrest came shortly after Samiul succumbed to his injuries.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Jayanta Sarathi Borah, informed the media that traffic police were not immediately aware of the incident on the night it occurred.
On July 25, a Bolero vehicle had hit a scooty rider. The following morning, the actress voluntarily appeared at the police station and was allowed to leave on a PR bond. A notice was later issued for her to return as needed.
Though an FIR was filed by Samiul's family, it initially did not name the accused. However, police later established Kashyap's involvement on July 26.
Initially, charges under Sections 115(2), 125, and 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) were filed. Following the victim's death, Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) was added.
Authorities have requested the Forensic Science Laboratory to examine the vehicle thought to be involved and are reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity.
DCP Borah also mentioned that Kashyap was medically examined following her arrest. “Since she voluntarily came to the police on July 26, there was no immediate necessity for a medical check-up back then,” he remarked.
The victim’s family has raised serious concerns about Kashyap’s actions, claiming she did not stop to help Samiul after the accident and failed to visit him in the hospital.
