New Delhi, April 14 (NationPress) In a bid to promote innovative practices and acknowledge professionals excelling in National Highway development, the sixth edition of the National Highways Excellence Awards will take place at Bharat Mandapam on Tuesday.
Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, along with Ministers of State for Road Transport & Highways Ajay Tamta and Harsh Malhotra, Secretary, Road Transport and Highways V. Umashankar, and senior officials from the ministry and the NHAI, will be in attendance.
According to an official statement, NHEA 2023 will act as a platform to celebrate outstanding achievements in the National Highway infrastructure sector and honor professionals and stakeholders for their contributions to the construction and maintenance of the nation’s top-performing National Highway assets.
The full-day event will host a variety of panel discussions featuring domain experts, covering topics such as emerging technologies in highway construction, development of highways in hilly terrains, and the global competitiveness of Indian construction firms.
The National Highway Excellence Awards were established in 2018 by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways to incentivize and motivate key stakeholders and foster a spirit of healthy competition among all involved in the development of the country’s highway infrastructure.
Official figures indicate that the length of India’s National Highway network has expanded by 60 percent in the last decade, growing from 91,287 km in 2014 to 146,195 km in 2024, making it the second-largest road network in the world.
In a significant milestone, National High-Speed Corridors have seen an increase from just 93 km in 2014 to 2,474 km in 2024, showcasing a remarkable enhancement in the country’s infrastructure.
This rapid expansion of highways is attributed to initiatives undertaken by the Centre, including flagship programs like the Bharatmala Pariyojana.
Additionally, 2,540 km of highways have been developed through Externally Aided Projects (EAP) with financial support from the World Bank, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) as of November 30, 2024.
