Bhubaneswar, Oct 7 (NationPress) Following the brutal murder of a prominent lawyer and member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Berhampur, Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik voiced grave concerns regarding the deteriorating law and order situation in Odisha. He stated that a pervasive atmosphere of fear has enveloped the state, even during the festive season.
“During this time of celebration, a sense of insecurity looms over the state. People are starting to feel unsafe,” Patnaik remarked in a post on his X account on Tuesday.
Patnaik condemned the tragic shooting of senior advocate Pitabas Panda near his home in Berhampur city of Ganjam district, calling it a heinous and distressing act.
He offered his condolences to the family of the deceased Panda.
Patnaik emphasized that such incidents have instilled fear among the populace of the state.
“Events such as the shocking crime aboard a Laxmi bus in Kanas, the rape incident in Rourkela, the communal discord in the generally peaceful city of Cuttack, and the night curfew in Balasore are deeply troubling,” he pointed out.
He also criticized the BJP government regarding the alleged police sub-inspector recruitment scam, which he claimed has demoralized aspiring youths.
“The BJP government in the state has not upheld standards of transparency and accountability in public recruitment,” he stated.
“The BJP administration has utterly failed to ensure law and order in peaceful Odisha, fostering a climate of trepidation among citizens,” Patnaik added.
In questioning the government's inaction against rising crime, Patnaik asked, “Why is the government not taking decisive measures to prevent such crimes? It is imperative that the government acts responsibly and protects the interests of the people.”
Meanwhile, the Opposition Congress has also criticized the BJP-led state government over the alleged decline in law and order in Odisha. The party alleged that despite Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi holding the Home portfolio, the state continues to experience a daily increase in violent crimes.
